DFT students in Kindergarten through fifth grade are participating in a nationwide "Hour of Code" event sponsored by Code.org, an organization dedicated to expanding participation in computer science. Coding allows students to develop important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas!
Our students and teachers are spending one hour learning how to use blocks of code to control the actions of characters in a game. By dragging and dropping commands, then viewing the "hidden code" in the command blocks, they are learning the basics of how programmers create games and other software. The students also participated in an "unplugged" activity -- they used binary code to construct a bracelet with 1's and 0's (black and white) beads to represent the first initial of their first name.
